that is interesting... indeed the md5sum was incorrect (I downloaded it 
twice too - using the big button onthe ubuntu.com home page - 
ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso)
I found another place to download, and this one has the right md5sum...
this has installed without a hitch... thanks for the hint...

Why don't you make this check a standard operation after the download?
