1. aptitude install cups
2. add three lines to cupsd.conf,
ServerAdmin my_em...@my_domain.tld
Listen: LAN_IP_OF_SERVER:631
Listen: HOSTNAME_SERVER:631
(yes, replace those ALLCAPSVARS by the real thing, 192.168.42.6 and
oystercatcher.aims.ac.za in my case)
3. service cups restart

I get 400 BAD REQUEST (hostname access) or 403 FORBIDDEN (IP access) from
another LAN host using firefox.
Also hostname access gives this in /var/log/cups/error.log:
E [01/Nov/2010:14:56:13 +0200] Request from "192.168.42.11" using invalid Host:
field "oystercatcher.aims.ac.za:631"

I'm just trying to the CUPS administrative web interface.

I can send feedback and up debug levels with some direction here.

0 r...@oystercatcher:/etc/cups#lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
0 r...@oystercatcher:/etc/cups#dpkg -l cups|grep ii
ii cups 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.2 Common
UNIX Printing System(tm) - server

These are lacking in completeness, btw:
