Try to set the authentication mode via /etc/cups/cupsd.conf (not printers.conf). See directives like "DefaultAuthType", "AuthType", ... and more info in http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.4/ref- cupsd-conf.html (I searched this page also for "auth" with the browser).
