Found a fix for this, used a *very* helpful link for finding which parameter
to use in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
for line:
options snd-hda-intel model=*parameter*

For dell studio 17, with 2 headphone jacks, I used dell-eq

(In 10.04, dell-m6 worked fine but failed to work in the upgrade to
10.10)
