I just replaced the motherboard on this pc because the video hardware
somehow died, and with a different video chipset the problem persists.
Turns out the issue is the wifi hardware, which is the same for both
boards. Looks like a Via chipset, VT6656, which plugs into a USB header
on the board. The hardware never worked under Ubuntu (I never tried very
hard), so I unplugged it from the header and the machine boots fine.
