I had just same problem, just installing compiz on a kubuntu installation. found the solution: compiz-core and compiz-plugins do a gconf schema update/remove when uninstalling. but that leads to an error when gnome, i mean gconf? is not installed. Maybe this is not correct exactly, but: if you have kubuntu, just #install compiz-gnome#, that installs a few dependencies (gnome packages) - so now you can uninstall(/update?) compiz-core
