Binary package hint: gdm
Output from system operating under Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) follows:
a...@pluto:~$ xauth list
Pluto/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7adf6a3bc46df973a859107fc753fd46
localhost.localdomain/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1

pluto.my.test:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7adf6a3bc46df973a859107fc753fd46
localhost:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 7adf6a3bc46df973a859107fc753fd46

Output from the same system after being upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
follows:
a...@pluto:~$ xauth list
Pluto/unix:0 MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 b2454808aa25b2ac47f30f72b0d50946
a...@pluto:~$
The X server display of the former system (Hardy) allows access for X
clients running on remote hosts, whereas the upgraded system (Lucid)
does not. Of course this can be explained because there is no MIT-
MAGIC-COOKIE available for use by the remote system. Generation of the
necessary cookies is done by the display manager which in this case is
the GNOME Display Manager (GDM).
Please notice that this report is being submitted with my system being
operated by Hardy which is the system that works correctly. I had to
restore my system from Lucid which is the failing system to Hardy in
order to produce the evidence (above) which demonstrates what is broken
on Lucid.
