You are brilliant!  
I found it right away.  The issue was a comment added to a line in /etc/profile.
The " //This " had been read as a variable instead of being ignored, as it had 
been for months before that.  The code had been installed to force root log-out 
after 10 minutes, and as that was done as an illustration in the book I was 
working on, the whole section could be "#" commented out.
Brilliant, I tell you!  Brilliant.
