Can you add to the report:
The version of gnome-panel you have (dpkg -l gnome-panel)
A list of all the applets you have on your panel
A copy of your dmesg
A copy of /proc/mdstat
An example showing gnome-panel eating memory - e.g. a few lines from
top for normal and during hte check.
