Anyway, you don't mention why you felt the need to take these steps - if your system was hanging, or simply displaying an unpleasant warning message at boot time. The unpleasant warning message is taken care of with plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.1 in lucid-proposed, and will also soon be fixed in maverick-proposed.
