This probably is not a user configuration error, or configuration
clutter from an older ubuntu version.

I just did the following:
-updated my Ubuntu 10.10 install to this morning's latest updates
        -created a brand new user
        -rebooted
-logged in as new user, for the first time
-opened file manager, double-clicked on a movie which started playing
in totem

I still encountered the bug.
