I tried your suggestions, but they failed. I noticed I was still running GRUB 1.5 and took the occasion to upgrade, without any luck. I think it made the hybernate/sleep function work, but resume still failed. Eventually I found a tread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1469340&page=17) mentioning the possibility that an SD-card in the card reader could cause the problem and it was in my case. Using the unmount_sd script on that page, solved the problem completely with inserted SD-card.
It seems that the bug can have a lot of different causes and solutions. Hopefully they all get addressed in the code soon.
