It should be noted that it is not only Firefox. Other apps that use the Gtk file selector can do the same. For example I can also reproduce with Opera.
It is also worth noting that if you run Opera under KDE, Opera will use the KDE file selector instead. Under these conditions Opera switches into the directory rather than overwriting the directory with a file.
