not able to reproduce it here under Ubuntu Maverick ,I have just added a second keyboard layout and is displayed fine with ambiance theme, by the way, there is not a keyboard applet available under Maverick because is dispatched automatically when you add an entra layout with gnome- keyboard-properties)
