On my IBM T43 I managed to perform the upgrade although it messed up the display. So, I had to reinstall the ATI-drivers, which was quite a task in the text mode (lynx!) but managed to pull it through (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Feisty_Installation_Guide)
knetworkmanager seems to work somehow now. At least it doesn't crash at 28% when connecting to wlan. VPN still produces nothing and the app crashes much more often than it should.
