This has nothing to do with pam; unsetting the package.

The errors show failed login attempts on the console. If the getty on
/dev/tty3 is receiving input while in a graphical session, that means
the X session is running on the wrong tty. Please check this with '$
sudo grep VT /var/log/gdm/:0.log'.

In any event, there has been no further feedback from the submitter
since before the 10.04 LTS release. This is most likely a bug related
to VT allocation that has already been fixed; please confirm whether
this problem is reproducible in 10.04 LTS or later.

** Package changed: pam (Ubuntu) => ubuntu
