Got home from work, powered up into recovery mode and ran "aptitude- update && aptitude dist-upgrade", allowed all upgrades. Rebooted to GDM, logged in - and everything's back. If someone can tell me where the aptitude upgrade log file is (if any), I'd be glad to post the contents, hopefully including whatever fixed the problem.
