part of the problem is that I am unable to undo the process so as to tell you what you need to know! What I did was to take the freshly installed 10.04 distribution audacious, which unlike the prior 9.x versions is apparently no longer two packages (one for gtk) but a single unified package with an option switch to go to the gtk interface.
so I selected the gtk interface and so far so good except iirc it also no longer has any indicator to say if I am in Shuffle or Repeat modes. Now here's where I cannot help you: there was an option to remove the menu, meaning the Files Edit etc menu bar, not to detach it, but to hide it, and since none of those options really make much sense in the context of an mp3 player, I chose to hide it (perhaps on the View menu?) and that leaves only the TapeRecorder-like controls for play, next, stop, pause and previous; with most apps where you can hide the Files menubar those same options can be found by a right-click on some salient part of the remaining pane, but in audacious none of the remaining panels offer any such menu.
