Same here with Lucid-amd64 and NBR. Just a guess from me: I have configured a "true" root-account and the 1st user is not listed in /etc/sudoers (this is default when installing from alternate CD).
Probably update-manager does not get launched, because user does not have proper permissions? Should be launched by 'gksu ...' instead of 'gksodo ..' to ask for root password? Netbook-Rewmix does probably not launch because it is used most of the time on batteries?
