A few more questions:

* What platform is the server (Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, Mac Snow
Leopard, etc.)?

* Do you auto-mount the server share or are you mounting it via Nautilus
when you log in?

* What permissions do you have on the share (read-only, read-write,
guest)?

* Is the network share your Shotwell library (i.e. is it the directory
in Shotwell's Preferences dialog)?
