I had the nearly the same problem with the same monitor. It would start in 1280X960 mode. I could switch it to 1360x768 running compiz on the Nvidia 173 driver but I never did get it to start that way. I came to the same solution...I switched monitors with another computer and it runs great at 1280x1024. It isn't a problem with a wide screen monitor. I am running a 24" wide screen on another computer with the same video card. I just wish I could get it to run Netflix without using Virtual Box! It works but is slow....
