Hi Fabio,
I’ve tried all the versions, and none of them installs. The main problem is, that Sun’s Openboot only allocates about 4MB – 10MB for the kernel, which means that whether you install from CD or network, it loads until it reaches address 0xA00000, and then you get the familiar ‘Fast data access MMU miss’ error. This happens for versions of Openboot of 4.0 or less, with all versions of Ubuntu from 9.10, to 10.10. Ubuntu 8.04 boots and runs, till it gets to ‘Select and install software’, when the installer fails, but I think this is because it tries to download the software from an archive server, none of which has version 8.04. 9.04 boots and runs, but doesn’t understand IDE drives – I think this is because it’s loaded the drivers into an inaccessible (for Openboot) part of memory. If you could shrink initrd down to the right size, everything would work. The nearest I’ve had to success, is to install Ubuntu 6, and do a manual upgrade to 8.04 from a CD, but it’s a long and painful process, as you have to do it piece by piece, or dependencies get very mixed up, and the OS becomes corrupted. Status in Ubuntu: New Bug description: 8.04 Hardy nstallation from CD proceeds to "Selecting and installing software" stage, then fails. Installation from Mini-iso fails, since no archive carries the hardy distribution. 9.04 boots, but never gets off the ground, since 9.04 can't find the CDROM drive from which it booted. If a USB CDROM drive is used, it then can't find the IDE disks, even if the driver is specified. I know this may be low priority for you, but it is impossible, for one reason or another, to install anything but 6.06 on a Sun Blade 100, or a Sun Ultra 10. Any attempt to upgrade from this, leads to either failure, or an unusable system.
