I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 and I also have this problem. I also have the grub problem where I turn the machine on from cold and the screen goes blank, if I turn the power off again (via the switch) and back on it shows the grub screen with 6 choices. Only one of those choices allows a normal boot, there did not appear to be any problems with the install and 10.04 had no known problems from my perspective. I have tried to edit the first grub item by replacing quiet and splash with nomodeset, as this was something I found in the forums but the setting does not hold as upon restart the quiet splash is back. I really took a chance that this was something that would benefit my system and im glad it does not seem to have further ruined it. I would really appreciate any guidance for these 2 issues. Many thanks Darren
