Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

Prior to crash I had done a large fiesty update and had to use aptitude to get
update to finish and restarted box and xserver broke. So i fixed that with
dpkg-reconfigure.
I also had just updated sources.list from ubuntu-nl.org.
Update manager showed there were updates so I had it refresh. And I decided to
check on my nvidia drivers, so closed update manager and ran synaptic to see if
nvidia drivers were installed and they were, even though i had uninstalled them
to install the nvidia driver from the nvidia site.
I decided to reinstall nvidia glx and nvidia kernal common (rt click and select
reinstall) and also select nvidia settings for installation. It was at that
point that synaptic crashed and I am here. Hope this helps as this has been a
stable machine with dapper and edgy.
