That is very strange, can you explain how is that different than downloading the precompiled binary?
How did you install dependencies for the build? Maybe you are missing a dependency and thus the build leaves out something...? I find it hard to understand how can this work... I used apt-get build-dep, so it probably got everything and created a binary identical with the one in the repositories (or so would I assume).
