Public bug reported:

Hello.

I hit this issue along with other probles in the date when AMD Catalyst
10.11 was released on AMD website.

Before I downloaded update, I installed latest available updates for OS,
that also contained kernel update.

Then, I installed Catalyst 10.11. Installations was without uninstalling
previous Catalyst ( pre-release build for Maverick ). All went OK so I
performed reboot as Catalyst Installation suggested.

When booting, I checked again tyo see if packages actually were updated.
When navigated to Synpatic, I noticed, that package numbers did not
change and they still are old - fglrx 7.80. So, I performed Complete
Removing of fglrx driver in Synaptic. Then performed OS restart.

During reboot, I faced system freeze on black screen, just after Ubuntu
loading progressbar ( splash screen ) appeared. After several same lock-
ups / freezes ( just before Logging screen ), I decided to try recovery
using Genuine Canonicals Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD. Using it, I managed to go
in recovery mode and perform all available repair options, that
included:

Cleaning ; DPKG ; GRUB generation, X restarting.

After successful repairs, I managed to get into Ubuntu desktop again,
but now I cannot enable Extra Visual Effects anymore.

Tried installing / uninstalling Compiz 0.8.6 / 0.9.2.1 - nothing helps.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
