Ah! I see it in the repos. Yet, for some reason, its not installing
with the standard sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.

I tried sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^ , which seems to re-check
the dependencies, and I have been poking around Synaptic Package
Manager. ***** It looks like Ubuntu doesn't depend on the kernel. *****

All the packages have "Dependent Packages" leading to linux-generic and
linux, but neither of those two packages are required by ubuntu-desktop.

[This may be coming up for me, because I have been using gtkorphan to
remove extra packages that I had installed back when I had edgy. Some
of the packages I had installed manually (EasyUbuntu and
ubuntuguide.org), and I wanted to take advantage of feisty's automatic
handling of these things. I just uninstalled everything I could, except
ubuntu-desktop/minimal/standard. I may have removed one of the kernel
meta packages in the process. ]

I will manually install the package, and return back to this thread...
