Ah! I see it in the repos. Yet, for some reason, its not installing with the standard sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade.
I tried sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop^ , which seems to re-check the dependencies, and I have been poking around Synaptic Package Manager. ***** It looks like Ubuntu doesn't depend on the kernel. ***** All the packages have "Dependent Packages" leading to linux-generic and linux, but neither of those two packages are required by ubuntu-desktop. [This may be coming up for me, because I have been using gtkorphan to remove extra packages that I had installed back when I had edgy. Some of the packages I had installed manually (EasyUbuntu and ubuntuguide.org), and I wanted to take advantage of feisty's automatic handling of these things. I just uninstalled everything I could, except ubuntu-desktop/minimal/standard.
