I have this problem on a Thinkpad t410s. Further, whenever I plug my computer into an external monitor, the display on the external monitor looks funky, with wavy lines etc.. like the refresh rate isn't set correctly. just to be sure, I checked for the problem in windows, and don't have an issue using an external display. I've tested this problem on two different projectors, and two different monitors (I have to give presentations fairly often). My thinkpad has an i5-540m processor.
