I've installed the latest updates, there was a newer pulse audio server
and a few other pulse related packages.  No difference.

I then installed the latest alsa sound drivers as per the instruction at
the link provided.  The package installed was:

There was no difference after this either.

I could still only just hear a feint test sound with earphones in.

I also tried that pasuspender command again with the new drivers.  Still
no sound with that.  The only difference with the command was that it
completed in 2 seconds instead of 10 seconds with the old drivers.
