Having this same problem on Ubuntu 10.10 running on Sony Vaio VGN-Z590 in Intel graphics mode.
Happens on resume from sleep about 1 out of 5 times. Also happens on cold boot if previously booted Windows or previously booted in Nvidia graphics mode. (This is not surprising due to the way Sony customized the hardware.)
