Problem persisted when trying to fix it again with above solution after
reinstalling Ubuntu 10.10 (due to Nvida driver problems)

Seems the above solution was not enough.

Got it to work after some trial and error with reference to the
previously mentioned post:

What worked was I had to make a 
/etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-ehci_hc    
and
/etc/pm/sleep.d/20_custom-xhci_hc

file to fix the problem.... one for ehci and one for xhci

the /etc/pm/config.d/usb3-suspend-workaround   file did not solve the
problem so I threw it out.
