Yes, I'm using grub2. It's a bit more complex than grub-legacy. 
not really an improvement unless you like the possibility to add a background 
picture.

At the moment I don't know what to test either but maybe you can check 
something:
Do you have a framebuffer module running ?

> lsmod |grep fb

if so, then do you have plymouth installed ?

> dpkg --get-selections |grep plymouth.

further i'd like to know witch kerel you are using:

> uname -a

these things might shed some light on this issue.
