Thank you Wouter,

My tests were done with a Debian Squeeze server (nbd-server 1:2.9.16-7) and an
Ubuntu Lucid chroot (nbd-client 1:2.9.14-2ubuntu1).
I did all the steps mentioned in /usr/share/doc/nbd-client/README.Debian before
reporting the bug and I still I had to use the above workarounds in order to
make the client boot.
As soon as I upgraded the chroot to Natty (nbd-client 1:2.9.16-6ubuntu1), all
the problems disappeared and no workarounds were necessary, so I'm marking this
as "Fix released".

BTW, I think that the following line in /usr/share/doc/nbd-client/README.Debian:
"- DO NOT add configuration for the root filesystem to /etc/nbd-server."
should instead read:
"- DO NOT add configuration for the root filesystem to /etc/nbd-client."

So only one workaround in initramfs-tools (LP bug #682445) is still
needed to have a Natty system netbooted with nbd, everything else works
fine. Thanks again!
