I have experienced similar problems on Ubuntu since 9.04 (now on 10.10) on several different machines, even after clean installs and subsequent updates+upgrades. The problem is certainly around the interaction of Firefox online/offline handling, Network Manager, and Gnome session handling of power, hibernate, suspend.
