I can confirm that the problem seems to have gone away for my laptop.
1) Used Software Center to install "mdadm"
2) Due to error of "UDEVD-WORK..../dev/null", I modified naskoos' process
slightly:
I run mdadm once from terminal using this command:
 "sudo mdadm --manage /dev/null".

The output was:
"mdadm: /dev/null does not appear to be an md device"  {as predicted}

I am unclear whether step #2 is necessary but I didn't feel like taking
chances.

Now on reboot, the problem goes away. I still miss the nice splash
screen from 9.04 but I shed about 15 seconds of bootup time looking at
this error message. If the problem returns, I will update.

A big congratulations to naskoos!! Thanks.
