Ho hum. I've disabled AHCI in the BIOS setup (and set it to IDE - not sure quite what this means because the CD & HDD are SATA drives).
*** AND IT WORKS ! *** I went through every combination of these settings with the last release, so somethings clearly changed (2.6.20?) in this one. Many thanks for your help!
