Hi, At the moment ran out of options for your problem but I've seen other solutions from other people which might work. When you tried several solutions from different people an nothing works out it might be a good idea to do a fresh install indeed.
In a lot of circumstances a fresh install often helps. Most distro version upgrades can go buggy when packages installed from outside the standard distro repository are not removed before version upgrade. (I've seen that happening very often...most are unrecognised package conflicts) Sorting out which conflicts you have is very time consuming and even then you might have some potential conflicts that will go unnoticed but crop up after some time. A fresh install is 20 minutes (I persume you have your /home on a seperate partition and will move the "dotfiles" from your home directory to another location) be aware that a fresh install of lucid is perfect but updating it might get you the same problem that I had. (well, there is a solution for that) still, at the moment Lucid 10.04 LTS seems at the moment the best choice (I have maverick on a testcomputer but it is overall still a bit flakey and incomplete so I won't be moving to maverick any time soon.) Good luck, and if you wish to PM me just let me know.
