it seems that its actually the unity plugin for compiz that is causing the problems because when the plugin is disabled the borders don't disappears...only thing is that after disableing the unity plugin compiz has to restart with compiz --replace so that effects can still be used....also the unity shell of course disappears with the plugin disabled
