Binary package hint: coreutils
Some distributions and *nix operating systems support the 'dd
conv=sparse' method for writing to block devices sparsely (using seek()
to pass over large areas of nulls). This appears the sparseness of a
filesystem image to be carried through when writing to an underlaying
sparse storage device (eg. over iSCSI).
