Thanks for the response. The mic is unmuted. The problem is not to do with Skype, Skype was a way of solving the problem. The problem exists after the machine is booted and before Skype runs hence it's not Skype. My work around was to write a script that 'opens' the webcam during the boot sequence, result is webcam mic then works. However, this script was not needed until one of the recent Canonical updates, probably to the kernel; I unfortunately have no way of knowing which one, sorry.
