When you connect the USB modem, a number of things need to happen,
including switching it to modem mode (which needs to be done for gnome-
ppp anyway, unless it's just a modem with no driver usb storage device
builtin), but also finding out which type of modem it is for some of the
additional features of modemmanager to work, and better handle your
modem.

Mine does the same, takes easily two minutes before it's usable ;)

So that we can better diagnose and fix what is going on, could you
please run the 'lsusb' command and report with its output on this bug
report? We need to know the USB ID of the modem (which lsusb will give)
to be able to find where in ModemManager it gets "stuck". Thanks!
