the discussion continue here or in a new bug for "Coherent handling of
the system bell"?

I think the latter is important, especially on servers that have audio
but no window manager. All too often the response to an intelligently
set system-bell is "I hate the system bell! How do I turn it off?!?!?"
That isn't the point. There are people (myself included) who need a
non-obnoxious system-bell to notify them of activity outside their
focus.

Does pcspkr only play one waveform? I had more control of my Apple ]['s
speaker than I do pcspkr.
