This sounds similar to problems others have reported, in that available
screen resolutions are not being detected properly.

A workaround is to edit your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add the higher
resolution that you need to each of the Mode lines.  For example, I did
this for mine to add 1400x1050:

        SubSection "Display"
                Depth           24
                Modes           "1400x1050" "1280x960" "1024x768" "800x600" 
"640x480"
        EndSubSection
etc.
