If it's of any help, running Live-Session with X300 (RV370) on a desktop.
Icons are displayed in left pane, icons on top are accessable, Firefox didn't 
open maximised, but in standard view.
>From booting until desktop everything ran very smoothly, no complains 
>regarding graphics.
(Next week I'll get new hw and hope for an awesome installation also.)

Apology for not being familiar with Unity, so not sure about some missing 
features, 
e.g. 
Places has no 'recently used documents'.
There is no applications menu, I need to open every single app via Nautilus and 
add it to the left pane in order to access it immediately any time again.
