Endless windows open at the KDE taskbar in Lucid Lynx, forcing restart:
In different circumstances, describe below, endless application windows open in
the KDE taskbar in Ubuntu Lucid Lynx with KDE. The application which is being
opened in an infinite loop seems to be a file manager, probably the default
file manager, which in my case i think it it Dolphin. Its icon can not be
distinguished at the task bar, which gets cluttered in a matter of seconds. The
rest of the user interface does not respond or responds too slowly to be of any
use in order to stop this effect. The simplest solution is to restart the
desktop manager with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (given that this shortcut has been
previously enabled) or a hard reboot hitting the poweroff button in the
computers case.
The causes that trigger this effect are still unknown, however it has been
observed when using firefox and trying to open a recent download, and as well
when click-opening a file within a desktop folder panel.
This problem is very annoying and forces to lose all the work in progress
within the GUI, so I would rate it as severe.
A possible workaround would be to implement a limit in the number of windows
which can be opened in the taskbar at any given time, or either to implement a
detection system which triggers a kill pid signal when more than x (say twelve
or so) number of windows for the same program are being opened within a short
timespan (say, five seconds or so).
Apart from those workarounds, the causes for this effect should be investigated
and fixed. It is possibly triggered when an OnClick mouse event is detected and
chanelled to a graphical desktop application program, like Dolphin.
