@JBoyan: On my T410 with the same modem (but different firmware), I have had the same problem. I've opened a new bug - including a bugfix/workaround - for modem-manager, which I found to be the culprit.
Have a look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/686418 Short version: Add the line ATTRS{idVendor}=="05c6", ATTRS{idProduct}=="9204", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1" to the file "/lib/udev/rules.d/77-mm-usb-device-blacklist.rules", then reboot. This should prevent the modem-manager from corrupting the firmware download.
