Probably an $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade would have worked in case of
kernel updates. On the message in the motd, I'm confident that this is
coming from the landscape package, not apt. Landscape will only show
security updates. In which pocket was the kernel? An $ apt-get policy
<kernel-name> will tell.
