I also tried editing /etc/init.d/gdm.conf as stated at top of this thread with no effect. Also "sudo service gdm start" does not work. A strange thing is that shutting down the laptop causes the NVidia logo to appear immediately after pressing the power button to shut down the machine. It appears that the driver is waiting for some user input or signal at boot time. And it gets it when shutdown is started.
