This got fixed thanks to sync for Maverick. Newer initramfs-tools has
proper error checking and thus such a condition can not appear.

It might be interesting to backport to lucid, in that case can hint
which changesets would be needed. But as it is rare enough to happen not
sure it is worth the effort.
