If the patch doesn't apply, that just means it's not meant for Maverick, it
can't be linked with the kind of bug you have. Trust me, it's the right fix. If
you want to try it by yourself, you can edit
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.SystemToolsBackends.policy and
replace:
<allow_inactive>no</allow_inactive>
<allow_active>auth_admin_keep</allow_active>
with:
<allow_any>auth_admin_keep</allow_any>
<allow_inactive>auth_admin_keep</allow_inactive>
<allow_active>auth_admin_keep</allow_active>
